To interject a little bit of totall local news, from the Denver Post
The man pushing a ballot initiative for creation of a commission to study visitors from outer space wants to put his plan before voters in May, which potentially could cost the city as much as $600,000 to hold the election.
…
No other ballot issues have surfaced so far, and there are no other municipal elections, Assistant City Attorney David Broadwell told Peckman during the meeting. That means holding a special election to deal with Peckman’s pet project could cost the city anywhere between $500,000 to $600,000, Broadwell said.
I’m glad to see the forced election will be over something important…

You gotta have something that wiggles, or pretends to put up a fight. This is just way too easy.
Klaatu barada nikto!
(I’m told that’s Venusian for “Gort! Take the money and run!”)
But you did however prevent the Necronomicon from falling into the wrong hands.
I didn’t make an Ash out of myself! 🙂
Could buy a lot of food.
What a gigantic asshole.
I have to say I agree with you 100%
You probably didn’t know, but your magnetic fields are out of harmony. The same man behind the alien study vote has something to fix that.
So either a first class fruit cake or a marvelously ambitious conman.
what if they landed tomorrow? We need to be prepared. Isn’t it obvious?
Does anyone who lives in Denver REALLY believe City Council or the Mayor was not going to find some revenue-enhancing measure to put on the municipal ballot next May?
May of odd years is when Denver typically does an election. In the years when the elected officials are not up, the city usually uses the opportunity to pass something that would not othereise pass in a higher turn-out election. The jail comes to mind.
Personally, I like that Peckman is drawing attention to the “ignored” election that Denver has. It will make it hard for the city to pick our pocket without us watching this time.
I’m not sure I get this, are you saying that government officials got some guy to run this bat dung crazy measure to fatten up the budget? I may not believe in the intelligence of most people, however I believe that they could have found someone that would have a better measure than putting ET on a Denver city commission.
On the other hand, you say that this highlights the need for people to pay attention to the off year elections, but I see this as the same effect that the National enquirer has on grocery store checkout lines. I see no quicker way to make sure your book is never on the NY Times Best seller list as to make sure it is in the grocery aisle next to the Nat Enq. In the same way, people are going to hear about this, shake their heads and think, “Wow, someone needs a new hobby.”
All I am saying is that there is no reason to believe the city was not going to have an election in May regardless of what Jeff Peckman does. The 2nd Tuesday in May of odd years is the designated election day for municipal elections
what do you propose to do about the jail?
I was making the point it was passed in an election like the one next May: a municipal election where there were candidates so it got little notice and therefore very low turn-out
